Alberta Glass has finalized a contract with Ellis Don Construction and Hines Development to supply and install the glazing work for the lower 3 floors of the Eighth Avenue Place project. Eighth Avenue Place
"Ellis Don’s Calgary Office was recently awarded a Guaranteed Maximum Price contract to construct Eighth Avenue Place in Calgary’s downtown core. The project entails the construction of the 50 storey east tower, plus 15 connected podium, winter garden and 6 level underground parking facility. The building structure will consist of a concrete core with structural steel frame, the first high rise building in Calgary to use this method since PetroCanada tower in 1984; the concrete core will be poured using self climbing formwork. When complete the east tower will be Calgary’s third tallest building standing 210.5 metres tall with over 1 million square feet of finished floor space, 1,143 underground parking stalls and 18 underground loading docks. EllisDon is also laying the foundation for a west tower which will be constructed on the site in the future. Architects, consultants, manufacturers and suppliers from around the world are working together on this LEED® Gold CS building with architecture inspired by the neighbouring Rocky Mountains. Among the many impressive characteristics of this project, the window washing equipment is one of the most unique, utilizing a work platform lowered from a roof mounted crane. The crane will rotate 360 degrees allowing access to any area of the tower’s exterior in need of maintenance from the 50th storey to the ground level. The new Eighth Avenue Place towers will occupy the former site of the Penny Lane Shopping Centre and the famous Cowboys night club. Elements of Penny Lane have been salvaged and a feature in honor of its long history will be constructed on the +15 level of the new building." (Ellis Don Website)
The work includes monumental entrance features and open lobbies encapsulated by towering glazed walls. At the centre is a spectacular Winter Garden glazed on 5 sides. Other features include point supported glazing, glass bridges and light wall features that bring cutting edge technology and applications to downtown Calgary. "The striking features and innovative design of this massive project will set a new standard for glazing in our city," says Alberta Glass President Paul Heyens. "Much of this technology and design is being used in cities from Shanghai to New York and will serve to elevate Alberta Glass’ level of skill and execution. We are delighted to be part of this project."
Work will begin in the Autumn of 2009 and will continue through to the end of 2010.
